Paying more for less? Getting to the bottom of the backwards supermarket slog

A six-month investigation into supermarkets’ use of plastics by the Australian Marine Conservation has turned up some results that seem pretty backwards.

AMCS Plastics Campaign Manager Shane Cucow told Julie-anne Sprague on 6PR Afternoons loose fresh fruit and vegetables were “frequently” more expensive than their bagged brethren.

“It is counterintuitive, because you would expect to be paying less when you’re not paying for plastic packaging,” Mr Cucow said.

“One of the big reasons loose produce helps us prevent food waste is because you only buy what you need, despite what supermarkets may claim.”
